Learn the Basics of Roulette

Roulette is a gambling game based on chance. It is a very popular game in casinos around the world, and if you want to win real money playing roulette, you need to learn how to play the game properly.

Rules of the Game

The croupier spins a wheel and throws a ball into it. The croupier announces the number the ball lands on, and then lets the ball settle into a pocket on the table where you have placed your bets. If you win, you’ll be paid out for your bets and the losing ones will get cleared off the table.

How the Wheel Works

The roulette wheel is a wooden disk that’s slightly convex in shape. It has metal partitions or frets called canoes around its rim that are painted in red and black to indicate the numbers. The canoes on a European-style wheel are nonconsecutively numbered from 1 to 36, while the canoes on an American-style wheel have two green compartments marked 0 and 00.

There are several types of bets in roulette, including straight-up, split, and street bets. The most common bet is a straight-up, which requires you to place your chips on one number on the table map.

A split bet is a type of bet where you choose two numbers to place your chips on. The payout for this bet is 17-1 if both of the selected numbers win.

In addition to straight-up bets, there are also outside bets (groups of numbers instead of individual digits). These bets are usually cheaper than straight-up bets, and have higher odds of winning.

Some bets, like the dozens bet, offer a payout of 2-1. Others, such as the high or low bet, offer even-money bets with a payout of 1-1.

Another bet, the line bet, is a type of bet where you place your chips on the outside border of the row of three consecutive numbers. If any of these three numbers wins, the payout is 5-1.
